Reports from last weekend 29th & 30th August

Saturday

The 1st Eleven were home to Budleigh Salterton, a lack lustre day which only got going late in our innings and then again as Budleigh approached the finish line. The pavilion talk was all about another 20 runs and what might have been. We lost the toss again and were inserted and found ourselves in trouble at 9 for 2, 13-3, 68-5, 110-7 steadily losing wickets with no partnerships, we finished our 50 overs on 171. The principle run getters were Stuart Rhodes 24 Jaz Kalsi 34 Jamie Overton 50 and Rob Ayre 27. The Budleigh openers made our work very difficult with an opening stand of 83 in quick time and apart from a little flicker of life when two further wickets fell in the 140's Budleigh got home with 5 wickets in hand and 4 overs to spare. The last three matches were not as the skipper would or team would have wanted but with an eye on the  future our youngster have impressed at the highest level. The team finished 5th in the Premier Division.

The 2nd Eleven were away to Budleigh Salterton. The two's were aware that they could finish 2nd in the Premier League if they won and and the odd result went their way as they started 12 points behind Exeter. Norths won the toss and asked Budleigh to bat, Billy Curtis soon had the oppos in trouble finishing with 3-32., Tim Cooke  became the hero spinning his web around six of the Budleigh batters taking his summers hall to 40 wickets. Budleigh all out for 149. The 2nd innings became a bit of stroll as Ian Gear belted a quick fire 72NO and and the ever dependable Warren Miller red inking another forty odd chasing down the target for the loss of two wickets and another 20 points. News from Exeter was beginning to sound good as they were struggling and finished up losing to Plymouth and only gaining 4 points.

Well Done Scott and the team for finishing 2nd in the Devon League

The 3rd Eleven were home to Seaton 2nds at Westleigh. Seaton after their long journey won the toss and decided to bat on a beautiful day. Dark's young bowlers Henry Plats-Martin and the ever impressive Raymond Clarke blew away the top order. Casey Elliot and Fergus O'Donnell took over and along with James Dark bowled Seaton out for 130. After tea the oldies found going hard on a slow low wicket but managed to keep the scored board ticking. At 101 for 2 with Tom Stanton in the 20's and Mark Overton in the thirties the garden looked rosy. At 101-5 four balls later a rear guard action was needed. Tom steadied the ship with help from Fergus and Henry and we eventually crossed the finish line with plenty of overs to spare.

Another well done to the team who have finished 4th in their first year. An excellent effort.

Colts

The U15's Bob Bridges semi final at Barnstaple & Pilton was a played on the artificial wicket on Friday afternoon. NDCC won the toss and elected to bat, an opening partnership worth 120 from Henry Platts-Martin and Craig Overton enabled the team to reach 168 after 20 overs. The bowling reply started a bit wayward and the fielding was a bit tired but eventually the team restricted B&P to 138 and a thirty run victory. Much credit must go to Barnstaple as the ground was very wet ensuring cricket was played. It was good to see both sides were helping to mop up the excess water earlier in the day!

The Final V Plymouth at Exmouth

Plymouth won the toss and asked our youngsters to Bat. The wicket at Exmouth was not one of their normal shirt fronts and seamed about a bit. Scoring runs was difficult and slow. The batters reached 103 all out which was probably 15-20 under par. The Plymouth chase was fast and furious but was matched with our fighting spirit lead by Clifford the coach on the side lines. The fielding and spirit was magnificent and the 1st could learn lots about keeping your heads high and never giving in. At 83-2 with 17 overs left all looked lost but again the boys came back with wickets from Robert Mann, Jordan Hussle, Henry Plats-Martin and Craig Overton and at 90 for 5 and 97 for 7 with three overs left the match was turning. A well hit boundary from Plymouth's no 9 relieved their pressure and the double was lost.

The season to date has been the most successful ever for any colts team from North Devon, Devon and South West Champions in the ECB U15 Cup. Beating the Cornish champions by 10 wickets in 3 overs, smashing the pre-tournament favourites Bath by 8 wickets on the their own turf. Well done to everyone.

On a personal note I would like to thank all the Mums, Dads & helpers for making sure the young players arrive at practice, at matches, without you the success would be very difficult. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Coaches and Managers for making it happen and of course the Colts!

A few thoughts from the Club Captain...

An indifferent league season for the first XI really...at times we played some excellent cricket and were rewarded with some good victories and some very close games in a losing cause.  Unfortunately the season tailed away poorly and only 14 points from the last 3 games was an unacceptable and disappointing end to the Premier campaign.  I like the players to set high standards for themselves and at times these haven’t been met, which can be very frustrating, however when we play positive cricket to our potential I don’t think there are many teams that can live with us and this has been proved by the way we have played the shorter version of the game and the success that we have had.  I’ve always said that it’s not talent that wins you games but attitude and we have certainly got that right in the twenty20 games so far....let’s hope it continues on Sunday!

It is excellent to see so many younger players making regular first team appearances and this is testament to the hard work that has gone into the colts set up at the club.  The club can certainly be very proud and happy that the playing strength of the club for future years is in safe hands.

A big thank you has to go to Gwynne for all his hard work and input which is really appreciated and also to Scott who has been a supportive and sympathetic leader of the 2s, especially when I’ve come calling for a late replacement! Congratulations must also go to Scott and the rest of his players for securing 2nd place in the 2nd XI Premier Division this season.

Finally I don’t think that the Club would have enjoyed so much success over the last few years without the contribution of our overseas player.  Stewart has been at the Club for the last 4 years and is an undoubted class player in all aspects of the game as well as a big club man. If he is to move on to other pastures next year he will be sorely missed.
